How it works

When you already know the project area in square yards, Yardaris converts the depth to feet and calculates the volume without making you convert the area back to feet first.

Formula used

Depth in inches:
CY = SY × Depth(in) ÷ 36

Depth in feet:
CY = SY × Depth(ft) ÷ 3

Both formulas produce the same result when the depth is equivalent.

Square yard calculator: calculate square yards and cubic yards

Use this square yard calculator when you already know an area in square yards and need to convert that area into cubic yards using material depth. Square yards measure area, while cubic yards measure volume, so depth is required to move from square yardage to a material quantity.

If you need to calculate square yards from square feet first, divide square feet by 9. For example, 900 square feet equals 100 square yards. Once you have the square-yard area, enter the planned depth above to calculate cubic yards.

Square yards to cubic yards: worked example

For a 500-square-yard area with a 6-inch layer, the volume is 500 × 6 ÷ 36 = 83.33 cubic yards. If you enter the same depth as 0.5 feet, the calculation is 500 × 0.5 ÷ 3 = 83.33 cubic yards.
