How the Aggregate Tons Calculator works
Yardaris calculates estimated tons as adjusted cubic yards × tons per cubic yard. Waste/overrun is kept separate from density. The density field remains editable so actual supplier, quarry or project information can replace a planning preset.
Convert cubic yards to tons for gravel and aggregate
Use this calculator to convert gravel yards to tons, cubic yards to tons, and other aggregate volumes into estimated material weight. Enter the cubic-yard quantity, select a material planning preset such as gravel, #57 stone, crusher run/GAB or sand, or enter a supplier-specific density.
A yards-to-tons conversion depends on material density, so the same number of cubic yards can weigh differently depending on material, gradation, moisture and source. For estimating, Yardaris multiplies the adjusted cubic-yard quantity by the selected tons-per-cubic-yard density.
How to calculate aggregate tons from cubic yards
Multiply the volume in cubic yards by the material density in tons per cubic yard. For example, 10 cubic yards of gravel × 1.40 tons per cubic yard = 14 estimated tons. If you add a 5% waste or overrun allowance, the adjusted volume becomes 10.5 cubic yards and the estimate becomes 14.7 tons.
For a truckload or material order, confirm whether your volume is loose or compacted and ask your quarry or supplier for the density of the specific material. The presets above are planning assumptions, not guaranteed delivered weights.
Common aggregate density planning examples
These are the editable assumptions used by this calculator, expressed as estimated US short tons per loose cubic yard. Actual material weight may differ.
- #57 stone: 1.45 tons per cubic yard
- Crusher run / GAB: 1.50 tons per cubic yard
- Gravel: 1.40 tons per cubic yard
- Sand: 1.40 tons per cubic yard
Example: 20 cubic yards of crusher run at the 1.50 preset gives 30 estimated tons before any overrun allowance.
How many cubic yards are in a ton?
There is no single cubic-yards-per-ton conversion for every aggregate. The answer depends on the material density. Using the Yardaris gravel planning preset of 1.40 tons per cubic yard, one ton is approximately 0.71 cubic yards (1 ÷ 1.40). Supplier tickets or measured project data should override planning presets when available.
