Explore ContractorCounter →Convert cubic yards (CY) to US short tons or tons back to cubic yards for gravel, crushed stone, sand, topsoil and asphalt. Select a planning density or enter a supplier-specific value.
CY → Tons: tons = cubic yards × tons per cubic yard. Tons → CY: cubic yards = tons ÷ tons per cubic yard. The density field stays editable so a project-specific value can replace any planning preset.
Use this calculator to convert CY to tons when you know the material volume, or calculate tons to cubic yards when you know the material weight. Because different materials have different densities, there is no single tons-to-yards conversion that works for every material.
Cubic yards to tons: multiply cubic yards by the material density in tons per cubic yard. Using the Gravel planning preset of 1.40 tons/CY, 10 CY × 1.40 = 14.00 tons.
Tons to cubic yards: divide tons by the material density in tons per cubic yard. Using the same Gravel planning preset, 14 tons ÷ 1.40 = 10.00 CY.
There is no universal conversion between cubic yards and tons. A cubic yard measures volume; a US short ton measures 2,000 pounds of weight. To estimate weight, multiply cubic yards by the material's density in tons per cubic yard. To estimate volume from weight, divide tons by that density.
Example using #57 stone: At the calculator's planning preset of 1.45 tons per CY, 20 cubic yards × 1.45 = 29.00 tons. In reverse, 29 tons ÷ 1.45 = 20.00 cubic yards.
Preset densities are rough planning values, not guaranteed material weights. Moisture, compaction, grading and source affect actual density. For ordering and hauling, use supplier or project measurements when available.
