How the Asphalt Tons Calculator works
For area and depth, Yardaris calculates cubic feet as length × width × depth in feet, then multiplies by asphalt density and divides pounds by 2,000 to estimate tons. For known cubic yards, it converts CY to cubic feet using 27 ft³ per CY before applying density. Waste/overrun is applied separately so it is never hidden inside density.
Asphalt tonnage calculator for square feet and thickness
Use this asphalt tonnage calculator when you know the paving length, width and compacted thickness. Length × width gives the project area in square feet. Yardaris then converts the compacted depth from inches to feet, calculates cubic feet, and applies the asphalt density to estimate tons.
Example: A 100 ft × 50 ft paving area is 5,000 square feet. At 2 inches compacted depth and the 145 lb/ft³ planning density used by this calculator, the estimated base quantity is about 60.42 tons before any waste or overrun allowance.
Asphalt calculator: square feet to tons
Square feet alone cannot be converted directly to asphalt tons because the result also depends on compacted thickness and asphalt density. Enter the project dimensions and planned compacted depth above, then use project or mix-design density data when available. The editable density field lets the estimate reflect the paving mix instead of relying on a fixed conversion.
How to calculate asphalt tons: worked example
For a 100-foot by 50-foot paving area with a compacted asphalt thickness of 2 inches, the area is 5,000 square feet and the volume is 5,000 × (2 ÷ 12) = 833.33 cubic feet. Using an assumed compacted density of 145 pounds per cubic foot, the weight is 833.33 × 145 ÷ 2,000 = 60.42 US short tons before waste allowance.
Formula: Asphalt tons = length (ft) × width (ft) × [thickness (in) ÷ 12] × density (lb/ft³) ÷ 2,000. For known cubic yards, multiply CY by 27 to get cubic feet before applying density.
Actual quantities can vary with mix design, placement, compaction, grade variation and overrun. Confirm order quantities with your asphalt supplier or paving contractor.
